Chapter 13

“Lady professor makes body armor and tactical pants look good. Probably not as good as she looks out of them though.” Tompkins elbowed Craig in the ribs as they stood in front of the coffee machine. “Right, Dawson?”

Trying hard to hold on to his patience as well as his temper, Craig said, “I told you. Nothing happened. I walked her to her car. She got in, drove away and I left. The end.”

He braced himself for more comments but they didn’t come.

Tompkins tipped his head to one side as if evaluating the sincerity of Craig and his words. “You’re telling the truth, aren’t you? You really didn’t go home with her.”

Craig threw his hands in the air. “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.”

“Why the hell didn’t you go home with her?” Tompkins frowned.

“I—” He realized he didn’t have an answer. “I don’t know.”

Yes, it had been an arrangement, a fake hook up to start, but he couldn’t deny that kiss had felt very real. Things could have easily ended up differently that night if he’d pursued it a little more. Asked her to coffee. Something. Anything.

But he hadn’t. He’d walked away with his tail between his legs like a scared puppy.

Tompkins scowled. “You damn kids nowadays. Don’t know how to close the deal.”

“I do. I can.” Even as he said it, Craig realized he’d backed off once again in Mary’s living quarters here on base.

He could have easily kissed her and he didn’t. And it wasn’t for lack of interest on his part either. Or hers, judging by the fact she’d leaned in rather than away.

Why was he such a damn boy scout when it came to women? What was wrong with him?

Tompkins shook his head. “Well, if you’re not going for it with her, I might give it a shot.”

“What?” Craig opened his eyes wide. “No.”

“Why can’t I? If you don’t want her . . .” Tompkins asked, amusement coloring his tone.

Craig did want her but he wasn’t going to say that. He searched for another reason. “It’s against the rules.”

“She’s a civilian, not military, so that doesn’t apply.”

He scrambled for another reason. “But still, she’s under our care.”

“And I intend to take very good care of her. Both in and out of our beds.” Tompkins followed his crude statement with a wink and a grin.

Craig felt the frown settle over his eyes. Things had gone from bad to worse.

This was what he got for being honest. He would have been better off leaving things alone. But no, that wouldn’t have been fair to Mary.

He couldn’t have let them continue to think Mary was into casual hook ups with guys she hardly knew, because she wasn’t. He could tell that just from what little he knew about her so far.

She wasn’t into casual hook ups.

The vise squeezing his heart loosened as he reviewed that thought and absorbed the truth of it. She wasn’t into casual hook ups so it didn’t matter what Tompkins said or even what he did—she wouldn’t fall for it.
